More than 510 Participants Helped End Hunger by Walking/Running Miles for Meals During Feeding South Florida®’s 6th Annual Outrun Hunger 5K Walk/Run on March 12

Event was a Simple Opportunity for Residents to Provide Meals for Those Experiencing Food Insecurity

Pembroke Park, Fla. – March 18, 2016 – Feeding South Florida® inspired more than 510 area residents to walk/run miles for meals to end hunger at its 6th Annual Outrun Hunger 5K Walk/Run presented by JM Family Enterprises, Inc. on Saturday, March 12, 2016. The 5K kicked off at Charnow Park, located at 300 Connecticut Street, Hollywood, FL 33019, and took place along the acclaimed Hollywood Beach Broadwalk and beach area in Hollywood.

The support of all participating children, adults, corporations, religious groups, and friends helped raise a total of $36,500, which will provide 219,000 meals for the 785,040 residents of Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties who are in need of food assistance.

The event began with a warm-up at 7:45 a.m., followed by the run/walk at 8 a.m. Until 10 a.m., the event included a marketplace and entertainment provided by Mike Sipe Entertainment. After the race, awards were distributed and a raffle took place.

The race was professionally timed by Split Second Timing using disposable transponders to ensure accurate scoring and time results. JM Family Enterprises, Inc. was the event’s ELITE Presenting Sponsor. Sunshine Health was the ATHLETE Registration Packet Sponsor, and Green Monkey Yoga was the CHAMPION Warm-Up Sponsor.

“As we celebrate our 35th anniversary of service to the community, we could not be more honored and grateful for the strong showing of community support,” said Feeding South Florida President and CEO Paco Vélez. “As the sole Feeding America® food bank serving South Florida, Feeding South Florida is the largest and most efficient food bank in the area. For every $1 donated to our organization, we can provide six meals or $12 worth of grocery products — that’s because it costs us only about 13 cents to move a pound of food.”
