Illuminating Summer Hunger through Feed Your Creativity: Feeding South Florida’s Annual Campaign Against Childhood Hunger

Summer Hunger in South Florida

Unveiling the Issue: Summer Hunger in South Florida

As the school year winds down and summer break draws near, the anticipation of carefree days and outdoor adventures fills the hearts of many children in South Florida. But amid this excitement, there exists a sobering reality for too many kids—a reality known as “summer hunger.”

During the school year, hundreds of thousands of children across Florida rely on free or reduced-price meals provided by their schools to ensure they have breakfast and lunch. However, when the final bell rings and summer break begins, these essential meals vanish, leaving a staggering 233,040 children in South Florida food insecure (as of 2022).

Empowering Young Voices: The Feed Your Creativity Campaign

At Feeding South Florida, we understand the profound impact of summer hunger on our community. That’s why we’re committed to shining a light on this issue and taking action to address it. One way we bring awareness to summer hunger is through our annual ‘Feed Your Creativity’ campaign.

Our Feed Your Creativity campaign engages children, schools, parents, and teachers in the fight against summer hunger. We invite young student artists from across South Florida to create artwork that raises awareness about summer hunger and submit their pieces to our website. Their powerful and thought-provoking artwork serves as a reminder of the challenges many children face during the summer months when access to meals is limited.

The culmination of this event is our gallery night, where all the submitted artwork is proudly displayed for the community to see. It’s an opportunity for us to come together, reflect on the issue of summer hunger, and celebrate the creativity and talent of our young artists. During this event, the winner is announced, and their artwork earns a prominent place on one of our 18-wheel trucks, bringing awareness to summer hunger throughout the whole year.

Beyond Art: Taking Action Against Summer Hunger

But Feeding South Florida’s efforts to end summer hunger don’t stop there. We’re dedicated to supporting programs that provide nutritious meals to children during the summer months. These programs not only fill empty stomachs but also allow kids to be kids and enjoy the activities that make summer special—playing outside, going to the beach, attending summer camps, and spending time with friends and families.

Join the Movement: How You Can Make a Difference

With your support, we can work toward a future where no child in South Florida goes to bed hungry. Whether it’s through volunteering your time, making a donation, or spreading the word about the importance of summer meal programs, every action makes a difference.

Together, let’s shine a light on summer hunger and take meaningful steps to ensure that every child has access to the nutritious meals they need to thrive. Join us in creating a brighter future for our community.
