HSBC Finance Corporation’s $50,000 Grant Allows Feeding South Florida® to Develop a Targeted Child Hunger Strategy for the Organization’s Service Area

Pembroke Park, FL – August 11, 2016 – With a $50,000 grant awarded by HSBC in August 2015, and the support of Feeding America™/ConAgra Child Hunger Corp funding, Feeding South Florida® was able to develop and soon implement a Child Hunger Strategy through programs and agency services to support households with children in need of food assistance. With the help of our Child Hunger Corp Member, we were able to perform a community needs assessment and leverage this assessment to create a zip code level gap analysis of child hunger during the school year and during the summer. We were then able to define a strategy that aligns with the national strategy but is specific to our service area – Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe County.

Feeding South Florida is proud to share that with the “Feed, Lead, Strengthen” approach, our goal is to serve all food insecure children in our service area by 2022. Based on our analysis, we anticipate reaching 16% of these children through direct programming (Feed), 10% by connecting them with SNAP benefits that their families are eligible for (Lead), and 74% by enhancing the capacity of our existing agency networks to target children and their families (Strengthen).

Our goal is a 100% incremental increase in children served each year for the next five years – taking the program from 800 to 25,600 children served. We will achieve this by:

  • Establish: Incentivize school participation with donated infrastructure such as refrigerators and shelving
  • Grow: Activate schools as to shop online and pick-up from our warehouse and central drop sites
  • Retain: Systematic monitoring of site performance, client satisfaction, and program impact.
