Feeding South Florida Board Chair Wins Red Cross’ Spectrum Award

Diana Brooks, VSBrooks ADVERTISING co-CEO and board chair of Feeding South Florida™, recently won the American Red Cross South Florida Region’s Sara Hopkins Woodruff Spectrum Award for Women in the Volunteerism category. The award recognizes outstanding dedication of time and service to causes and/or organizations that help improve the quality of life in the South Florida community.

Brooks was recognized at the 22nd Annual Sara Hopkins Woodruff Spectrum Awards for Women on Feb. 5, 2015 at The Ritz-Carlton Coconut Grove. In 2014, over 420 community leaders attended the Spectrum luncheon and raised more than $180,000 for the vital life-saving programs and services of the American Red Cross South Florida Region.

These leadership awards acknowledge the humanitarian principles of the American Red Cross: Humanity, Impartiality, Independence, Unity, Neutrality, and Voluntary Service. “Spectrum” refers to women’s impact across the broad scope of community life and also reflects the spectrum of cultures represented in the South Florida community.

Since July 2012, Brooks has served as board chair of Feeding South Florida. As a member of Feeding America™, the nation’s leading hunger relief charity with 202 food banks in the network, Feeding South Florida is the sole Feeding America food bank in South Florida, and the largest in the state, distributing almost 37 million pounds of food annually.

Brooks’ main goal as chair is to create awareness about who the face of hunger really is: older adults, children, the working poor, handicapped andveterans. Her participation helps to serve the 871,920 individuals in need of food assistance, including 287,650 children, older adults and the working poor, in Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade and Monroe Counties. She began volunteering her time to Feeding South Florida in 1999.

In addition, Brooks spearheads the engagement of VSBrooks ADVERTISING with Feeding South Florida. At VSBrooks, the entire team volunteers its time and marketing and advertising expertise for this worthy cause, for which the agency donates 100 percent in-kind marketing and advertising services.

“I’m honored to be recognized by the American Red Cross South Florida Region with the Spectrum Award for Volunteerism,” said Brooks. “Just as the American Red Cross exists to provide compassionate care to those in need, Ifeel like one of my greatest accomplishments has been taking an active role in the effort to end hunger in South Florida.”

Brooks is also the recipient of recent awards including South Florida’s 12 Hispanic Women of Distinction in 2014 by Latina Magazine, and was named one of South Florida Business Journal’s 2013 Influential Business Women.
