Bridging The Meal Gap: Tackling Summer Hunger with Summer Meal Programs

Children Summer Meal Program

The Summer Meal Gap in South Florida

As the summer months unfold, many families in South Florida face a daunting challenge: ensuring that their children have access to nutritious meals when school is out of session. For countless kids who rely on free or reduced-price meals during the school year, the absence of these meals can lead to increased food insecurity and hunger.

Feeding South Florida's Response: The Summer BreakSpot Program

Recognizing the critical need to bridge this gap, Feeding South Florida proudly sponsors the Summer BreakSpot program, an initiative supported by the USDA. Through this program, we strive to provide essential nourishment through healthy breakfast and lunch to children across South Florida during the summer months.

The Summer BreakSpot Program aims to fill the void left by the absence of school meals, ensuring that no child goes hungry during the summer break. From June through August, more than 250,000 meals are distributed at qualifying sites throughout the region.

Ensuring Nutritious Meals

These meals aren’t just cooked and handed out arbitrarily—they’re carefully curated by nutritionists and adhere to the USDA’s nutrition meal guide, ensuring that they meet the highest standards of nourishment health and wellness for growing children.

By partnering with local organizations and community centers, we create accessible meal distribution points where children can enjoy healthy and delicious food at no cost. These meals not only provide vital nutrition but also offer a sense of stability and support to families facing food insecurity.

At Feeding South Florida, we understand the profound impact that access to nutritious meals can have on a child’s health, well-being, and academic success. That’s why we are committed to making sure that every child in our community has the nourishment they need to play and thrive, regardless of the season.
