Eating Seasonally is the Best!
Feeding South Florida is proud to partner with many wonderful farms and agricultural partners across the Southeast, and we are so grateful for the fresh produce that arrives to our warehouse every week. We believe strongly in providing our partner agencies with flavorful, nutritious food that helps to build a strong foundation for healthy meals.
Although you may have heard the about the trend of eating seasonally, you may not be aware of all the benefits that come along with choosing fruits and vegetables that are grown at the same time of year that you eat them.
First, here’s an awesome resource from our friends at FreshFromFlorida.com to help get an idea of what fruits and veggies are in season in our area at any time of year.
Here’s some of the many benefits that come along with eating seasonally:
Seasonal produce tastes better! Strawberries in the spring and summer are a great example of this. You’ll notice that they are sweeter and so full of flavor. When produce is able to fully ripen in the sun, you really can taste the difference.
You’re being kind to the environment. Eating seasonally doesn’t just mean you’re getting a better product, you’re also supporting a sustainable farming cycle for the local environment. (Your local farmer will thank you!)
Eating seasonally is easier on your wallet. When fruits and veggies are out of season, they typically have to be shipped in from another area of the country and incur additional costs, which drives the price up for you, the end consumer. By eating seasonally, you’ll find items that are readily available and ultimately less expensive.
Seasonal produce packs a nutritious punch. When foods are sold out of season, they usually have to be picked before they are ready to undergo a long journey to their destination which means they’re not allowed to ripen on the vine. More nutrition and better flavor? Seems like a no brainer to us!
Still wondering what’s in season right now? Here’s what should be on your shopping list for March: Bell Peppers, Cucumbers, Oranges, Spinach, Strawberries, Guava, Tangerines, Celery, Mushrooms, Snap Beans, Tomatoes, Cabbage, Broccoli, and Cauliflower. With tons of healthy and delicious options, eating seasonally is a breeze!
