Twice a week, Elke Bachik, at 86 years young, volunteers at our Community Kitchen, where she helps package freshly cooked, nutritious meals for home delivery to clients. Supporting our mission is personal for Elke. “From the age of 10-14, I had no milk, no meat. I actually know what it’s like to be a child and be hungry. This work is so valuable to me, it is so rewarding. If you’re looking for a sense of purpose, I would say volunteer.” “I am a tiny, white-haired great grandma walking with a cane!” Elke laughs. “To my surprise and joy, on my first day, I was greeted warmly and enthusiastically as though I was just who they’d been waiting for."We were waiting for you, Elke!
